The Canon establishes the governing identity, purpose, principles, terminology, architecture, publication hierarchy, editorial standards, and development rules of RankingEngines and its Digital Asset Engineering body of knowledge. It is not a marketing document; it is the highest-level internal source of truth for the RankingEngines knowledge ecosystem, distinguishing the organization, its discipline, its maintained body of knowledge, its presentation platform, and its commercial applications.
Institutional Identity
RankingEngines studies, develops, applies, and stewards digital assets and the systems through which they create sustainable organizational value. Its knowledge includes Digital Asset Engineering, digital architecture, search and discovery, authority, structured knowledge, AI discoverability, governance and lifecycle management, measurement, strategy, and stewardship. It is not primarily a conventional SEO or marketing agency, website shop, domain marketplace, AI content operation, or service-led consultancy, and its identity does not depend on one search engine, platform, vendor, or trend.
Mission and Vision
The mission is to develop, maintain, test, and advance a rigorous, continuously evolving body of knowledge for Digital Asset Engineering, improving how organizations understand, design, govern, measure, and steward digital assets. RankingEngines prioritizes understanding before assertion, evidence before promotion, structure before scale, measurement before conclusion, and stewardship before short-term optimization; it should teach before it sells.
Digital Asset Engineering
Digital Asset Engineering is the systematic discipline of designing, building, governing, measuring, maintaining, and continuously improving digital assets and their supporting systems to create sustainable organizational value. The Canon governs this definition institutionally; DAE-001 and subsequent standards develop it formally.
Institutional Architecture
The ecosystem follows a conceptual hierarchy: RankingEngines → Digital Asset Engineering → Body of Knowledge → Standards → Frameworks and Models → Research and Evidence → Guidance and Assessments → Advisory and Implementation. These layers have different functions and are not interchangeable.
Governing Principles
Ten principles guide the ecosystem: Evidence Over Hype; Measurement Over Impression; Transparency Over Artificial Certainty; Systems Over Isolated Tactics; Long-Term Value Over Temporary Optimization; Structure Before Scale; Stewardship Over Abandonment; Correction Is a Strength; Practical Utility; and Intellectual Honesty.
Publication and Authority Hierarchy
Authority runs from Level 1 Canon through Level 2 Governance, Level 3 Standards, Level 4 Frameworks and Specifications, Level 5 Models, Level 6 Research, and Level 7 Application Guidance. Higher authority controls conflicts unless a formally approved exception exists; newer documents do not automatically supersede higher-authority ones. Credible evidence may challenge the Canon, with controlled amendment rather than suppression the proper response.
Current-State and Future-State Register
Approved current direction includes the existing site architecture remaining frozen until specifically changed, formal governance preceding uncontrolled expansion, and RE-CANON-001, RE-GOV-001, and DAE-001 governing institutional direction. A DAE journal, certification, benchmarking, public maturity assessments, AI knowledge assistants, and similar concepts are future-state ideas requiring separate evaluation and approval; possibility is not authorization.
